There was no mistaking Charie’s disappointment. “But I haven’t read the children their story,” she said, dismay clouding her lovely features as she came to her feet.

“I know how much you were looking forward to that, but this is a matter of your safety. Perhaps you can do so another time.”

“Domitri, what do you think?” Charie asked, and then chewed her lower lip.

He wanted to reach out and tuck back the stray curl that peeked out from her bonnet, but he kept his hands at his side. “Petrov knows what he’s talking about. I’m sure there’ll be another time to read to the children.”

“Very well.” Charie agreed, but Domitri could tell by the look on her face she was upset. “Thank you for permitting us to visit Suzette.”

“She talks about the two of you all the time,” Sister Honoré said. “Now, if you’ll follow me.”

Charie whispered another goodbye to Suzette, and then kissed her on the forehead.

Domitri turned to the child as Charie hurried from the room with the sister.

“Are the two of you married?” Suzette asked as she tucked her doll into bed beside her.

“No, why do you ask?”

“You should be. Thank you for coming to see me.”

“You are most welcome. You do as the sisters tell you, and grow strong again.”

“I will. And I’ll ask God to make Mademoiselle Marin marry you so you’ll be happy.”

“I wish you would.” Domitri gave her a grin. “Sleep well,” he added and squeezed the child’s hand, overjoyed to feel the warmth in the little fingers. The last time he’d held her hand, the fingers had been cold and nearly lifeless. What a miracle from God.

Leaving Suzette, he hurried down the corridor, pausing to look out a long window. It was as the sister had said—everything was obscured by snow. Hurrying along, he reached the lower floor just as the front doors were opened to permit Charie and Petrov’s departure. The wind and the snow drove them back inside.

Domitri pushed past them and stepped out on the portico. Although he knew Olar’s man was a competent driver, he doubted Petrov could deliver Charie home without mishap given the poor visibility and deep snow. Domitri wasn’t sure he could make it home, either.

Shutting the doors and joining the others, he pulled Petrov aside and spoke rapidly in Russian. He knew that Petrov’s knowledge of French was limited, and he needed to make sure the man understood.

“I do not question your skill, but I fear that the horses’ footing will be less than secure should you attempt to take Mademoiselle Marin home.”

“It is as you say, but the count is so concerned for her safety. He would be terribly upset if I was not to return her home this evening. He also expects me to pick him and Madame Marin up after their dinner.”

“Hopefully the count will be sensible and realize you could not possibly come after them in this.” Domitri gestured at the door. “They have most likely found another way home. If the sisters will permit it, I believe we must stay here for the night.
